Rep. Duncan Issues Statement on Obama's Keystone XL Veto

Feb 24, 2015 Issues: Energy

WASHINGTON, DC--In response to the announcement today that President Obama vetoed Congressional approval of the Keystone XL pipeline, Congressman Jeff Duncan released the following statement:

“Once again, this Administration chooses to side with environmental extremists instead of the American people. In vetoing Keystone XL, the President has chosen to weaken America’s energy security. The President has also chosen to satisfy the wishes of his campaign donors instead of listening to the majority of Americans and a bipartisan coalition in Congress. If the President isn’t willing to work with Congress to promote American jobs and North American energy independence, what is he willing to do? It seems the President is more interested in manufacturing constitutional crises than working for the American people.

Make no mistake, the President’s decision will cost thousands of American jobs while Canadian oil will now likely be shipped to China instead. Does President Obama really believe that the Chinese will be more environmentally responsible than American consumers?

At a time when our President continues to capitulate to hostile regimes like Iran, Cuba, and Russia, I can only conclude that this Administration is too eager to turn away from our allies and far too comfortable to embrace our adversaries. Instead of strengthening ties with our friend, neighbor, and top trading partner, Canada, the President has chosen instead to increase our dependence on Middle Eastern sources of oil.

Despite this terrible decision, I will continue to work towards North American energy security so that all Americans can enjoy greater prosperity and a brighter future.”
