Washington, D.C. – Congressman Jeff Duncan released the following statement following the shocking acquittal of Jose Ines Garcia Zarate:

“We now know what justice looks like in an illegal sanctuary city. It is truly devastating that local authorities didn’t cooperate with federal immigration law and that a jury decided to acquit the immigrant who, after illegally reentering our country several times, shot Kate Steinle in San Francisco while walking with her father. Words can’t express how truly appalled I am at this decision.

“It appears the jury was too concerned about being politically correct than delivering justice to an illegal immigrant who murdered an innocent woman. It doesn’t fit with the left’s narrative of open borders and shielding illegal immigrants from federal officials.

“These actions reaffirm my belief that we need to fix our broken immigration system and build a wall on our southern border. I also believe the Senate needs to take swift action in passing Kate’s Law which passed the House earlier this summer. I stand ready to support President Trump in any efforts to secure our nation from further harm by illegal criminals.

“My prayers are with the Steinle family as they wrap their heads around this decision.”
