Duncan on Masterpiece Cakeshop Supreme Court Ruling

Jun 4, 2018 Issues: Constitutional Issues

Laurens, S.C. – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court decided 7 to 2 in favor of Jack Phillips in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. Congressman Jeff Duncan (SC-03) praised the Court’s decision that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission’s actions against Mr. Phillips violated the Free Exercise Clause:

“Today’s decision was a victory for Jack Phillips who was treated extremely unfairly by the Colorado Civil Rights Commission with regards to his faith.  As stated by Justice Anthony Kennedy in the majority opinion, ‘The record here demonstrates that the Commission’s consideration of Phillips’ case was neither tolerant nor respectful of his religious beliefs.’

“I am hopeful that courts will continue to defend religious liberty in similar pending cases across the nation to ensure every single person can live out their faith freely and fairly.”
