Press Release

Laurens, SC – Today, Homeland Security’s Oversight and Management Efficiency Subcommittee Chairman Congressman Jeff Duncan of South Carolina, issued the following statement after the announcement of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano’s resignation:

“While I wish Secretary Napolitano well on her new endeavor, I hope the next Secretary of Homeland Security shows more respect and demonstrates greater openness to the people's representatives in Congress than she did during her tenure at the Department. During her time as Secretary, public distrust in the Department’s mission grew at an alarming rate and she failed to meet the standard of transparency that I would expect from someone in her position. On her watch we saw DHS refuse to acknowledge the threat posed by radical Islamic terrorists and witnessed a disorganized management approach that harmed the effectiveness of the agency.”

“I encourage the President to nominate a successor who will focus on eliminating mismanagement within the Department, and will work closely with Congress to keep the homeland safe while making the protection of America's civil liberties a top priority.”
