Duncan Praises Decision to Approve New Nuclear Reactors in SC

Mar 30, 2012 Issues: Energy

Washington, DC-Today, US Congressman Jeff Duncan praised the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's decision to issue a license to construct a pair of new nuclear reactors at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station in Fairfield County, SC:

"South Carolina leads the way in generating clean, safe, and reliable nuclear power. The licensing of two new reactors in South Carolina is a homerun for the people of our state. When the new reactors come online, the V.C. Summer facility alone will generate enough electricity to service over 2.2 million families in South Carolina."

"I can't stress enough how desperately our country needs an 'all the above' energy strategy that includes significant investments in nuclear power. Utilizing American energy sources like nuclear power is one of the most important things we can do to create American jobs.  The new reactors in Fairfield County are expected to create as many as 3,000 construction jobs and over 800 permanent positions once the facility's fully operational."

"Investing in nuclear energy will allow South Carolina's power grid to expand and attract new business ventures in the state. More nuclear power in the state means that businesses can grow and focus on putting South Carolinians back to work."

"South Carolina is currently third in the nation in its use of nuclear power. Today's decision by the NRC solidifies South Carolina position as a nuclear energy leader."
