As a life-long social conservative, I am a strong advocate for life and traditional family values.
The most basic component of our society is the family. Now more than ever, it is imperative that we protect the values that America was founded upon and have made our country great. I am a proud member of the Values Action Team because of my desire to protect family values.
- Pro-life: As a member of the Pro-Life Caucus, I will always stand up for the sanctity of life. I have cosponsored multiple pieces of pro-life legislation, including H.R. 374, the Life at Conception Act, which protects every human being at the moment of conception. I am also a cosponsor of H.R. 3, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act and H.R. 361, the Abortion Non-Discrimination Act, which protects healthcare providers from discrimination if they refuse to participate in abortion-related services. There is no reason taxpayer dollars should be spent on services as morally reprehensible as abortion. When I was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, I supported legislation that mandated a 24-hour waiting period before an abortion could be performed. On January 23rd, 2012, I introduced a bill that would take the South Carolina waiting period and apply it nationwide. H.R. 3802, the National Pro-Life Waiting Period Act would make abortion providers wait a 24 hours after a patient first comes into their facility seeking an abortion. While I realize that this bill does not go far enough to fight for the right to life, I do believe that it is a step in the right direction.
- Marriage: I also believe that marriage should be defined as the union of one man and one woman. South Carolina is one of 30 states that define marriage as the union of one man and one woman in its Constitution. I firmly support the Defense of Marriage Act and will always side with traditional marriage.
